We have many activities to choose from.  Look over the list below and the details that follow.  Don't see what you're interested in?  We're always open to new ideas and we would be happy to assist you with advice and support to set up a new activity or to take it on a trial run with a Now and Then Event.  The Now and Then Events are events that are held one or more times a year when a club member is willing to organize an activity for other members.  If you love to ski, then you might organize a ski-day or weekend.  If you love the theater, you might organize a trip to a local theater or a show in New York.  For more information, contact Activities.

Art Appreciation (Gallery visits)

If you want to learn more about the Philadelphia art scene, this is your activity. Our casual events include trips to galleries, studio visits, or occasional "First Friday" gatherings.  If you want to discover more about art and new artists, consider coming along.  For more information,  contact Art Appreciation

Book Group (Daytime)

Welcome one and all!  This informal, friendly group meets once a month in the morning to discuss a book chosen by consensus.  The monthly Newcomers Club newsletter provides a preview of the book to be read at the next gathering ... just to whet your appetite.  This group ususally meets at a member's home and new members are always welcome.  Why not get started on a new chapter in your life!  For more information,  contact Book Group (Daytime)

Book Group (Evening)

This is your chance to throw away the excuses and commit to reading!  The lively art of discussion is alive and well at this monthly book club that meets in the evening.  Just like the daytime book club, a preview of the current month's book is listed in the Newcomers Club newsletter.  This group meets in the home of one of the members and new members are encouraged to join!  Work (Read) better on a deadline?  This group is for you!  For more information, contact Book Group (Evening)

Bridge

We have many different groups and many levels, from real beginners to intermediate.  We play in each other's homes and sometimes have lessons to improve our skills.  We have both daytime and evening groups.  If you are interested in joining, don't hesitate.  It's in the cards!  For more information, contact Bridge

Cycling

Are you interested in taking in the beauty of our surroundings with friends?  The Cycling group is a way to do that and get exercise at the same time.  Members meet at a central location, get geared up, peddle out, stop for rest and a brown bag lunch, and then peddle back.  Cycling truly is "like riding a bike.  Once you've done it you never forget."  So switch into high gear and join in the fun!  For more information, contact Cycling

Dragon Boat Racing

Each year Philadelphia hosts a Dragon Boat festival in early October on the Schuylkill River.  Since 2002 the Newcomers Club has supported a courageous group of paddlers who race several times and spend a rewarding day for charity.  Other Newcomer members come out to support the team and socialize under the Dragon ladies tent!  For more information, contact Dragon Boat Racing

Foreign Language Chat - French, German, and Italian

We have three groups of members who meet to speak a foreign language.  The German, French, and Italian Groups meet every month for some lively discussions.  These friendly, talkative groups help members keep up their foreign language skills.  Isn't there always time for a chat in any language?  For more information, contact Language Chat

Gallivanters

For the adventurous in spirit!  If you are new to the area or like exploring, the monthly Gallivanters' events are day trips to Philadelphia or neighboring towns to visit museums, historic homes and gardens, show houses and much more.  Past trips have included The Barnes Museum, Longwood Gardens and the Pearl S. Buck House as well as a Mural Arts tour, a glass blowing demonstration at the Simon Pearce Factory, and antiquing in New Hope and Lambertville. Gallivanter events include lunch and carpooling from a convenient location and take into consideration school hours so that members can be home in time for school drop-off and pick-up.  For more information, contact Gallivanters

Holiday Tea

An annual favorite!  Traditionally this event has been held in mid-December at the Appleford Estate in Villanova.  The Holiday Tea is our best event for reuniting with old friends and making new friends in a festive and historic setting.  Finger sandwiches, appetizers, and desserts are provided.  Donations are collected for local charities.  The Holiday Tea is a great way to begin the holiday season!  For more information,  contact Holiday Tea

Information Exchange via Yahoo

We have an online discussion group through Yahoo Groups that allows you to reach out to the network of members to get quick answers to questions ("where can I find Thai noodles?") or request a recommendation for a pediatrician, doctor or dentist.  For more information, contact Yahoo Administrator

Luncheons

Each month, members are invited to attend a lunch at a local restaurant or share soup and a sandwich at a member's home.  At some of our lunches we have a speaker or a demonstration.  Past luncheons have included a speaker from the Main Line Art Center, authors, poets, and experts in Chinese therapy, antique appraisal, etiquette and protocol, wine tasting, and plastic surgery.  For more information, contact Luncheons

Mah Jongg

Mah Jongg is a 4-player game played with colorful tiles. It originated in China and has been played in America for decades. You may have seen it played in back rooms of Chinese restaurants, seen it in the movie Joy Luck Club or maybe are thinking, 'Mah what?'. It is a fun game involving some luck, concentration and skill. More challenging than Bunco and easier than bridge. If you like card games and socializing then it might just be for you! For more information, Contact Mah Jongg

Mothers Group

This is a dynamic, growing group of mothers who meet several times a month at each other's homes or for a play date in the park.  The Mothers group provides a great way to make friends while the children make their own friends through play. The Mothers group has gone a step further by organizing social outings without the kids and sometimes with spouses!  Mothers group is a wonderful source of information for schools, classes for children, and for babysitters!  The children are generally pre-school age and younger.  For more information, contact Mothers Group

Movie Night

Looking for a reason to get out of the house and have some fun?  Movie Night gives you that reason and is an ideal way for new members to meet other newcomers in a low key setting.  The date, movie title, theater location and time of the next gathering will be emailed the Friday before the date once theater times are confirmed.  Each person is responsible for her own ticket.  So, if you decide to come at the last minute or the babysitter cancels, there's no problem!  And don't forget your popcorn money.  For more information, contact Movie Night

New/Prospective Member Coffees

Periodically the Hospitality Committee hosts a morning coffee (or sometimes an evening cocktail party) for new and prospective members.  These are great opportunities for all new and potential members to meet the members of the club, ask questions and learn more about the club, and meet other new members.  For more information, contact Hospitality

Now and Then Events

These are one-, two-, or a few-time events that a club member is willing to organize.  Examples are ski trips, a spa weekend, and a group outing to a play.  They can be used as trial runs for new activity ideas.  Work with our Activities Chair to set one up.  For more information, contact Activities

Socials

At our monthly cocktail party, usually on the 3rd Saturday of the month, a member opens her home to greet newcomers new and old.  Each person or couple attending is asked to bring an appetizer for 8-10 people.  The Socials activity provides a great way to meet people and learn about the Main Line in a comfortable setting ... and an opportunity for a spouse to meet others in the community.  For more information, contact Socials

Tennis (Daytime)

We do the work, you do the Love-15.  Three established ladies' tennis groups play mornings on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  We add new players to our substitute list, giving them an opportunity to fill-in until an opening occurs in one of the groups.  Play level is generally around 3.0.  Tennis is a wonderful way to meet new people and to exercise at the same time.  For more information, contact Tennis (Daytime)

Tennis (Evening-Mixed Doubles)

Couples' indoor tennis meets once a month on a Saturday night for a friendly game of tennis and a potluck dinner to follow at a member's home.  Want to get in on a "win-win" situaton?  This group is looking for new couples whose level of play is 3.0 or better.  Don't forget ...  It's Game-Set-Match ... and Dinner!  For more information, contact Tennis (Evening-Mixed Doubles)

Wine & Dine (Themed dinners w/ shared cooking)

This groups invites all gourmands to attend.  If you like to cook, eat, and drink wine, this is the place for you!  Each month's Wine & Dine attendees are divided into small groups of 8-12 and are given recipes to follow.  A hostess is assigned and provides the wine.  Everyone shares in the cost of the evening.  Typically there is a menu theme that is followed for a year.  Recent themes have centered around selected works of literature, the travels of Marco Polo, and celebrations.  This activity provides another chance to include your spouse - or not!  For more information, contact Wine and Dine
